Creative Development: A Reflection On My Process So Far

Embarking on this choreography project, I wanted to keep a few things in mind as I had some experience with choreography from helping create our foundation group piece last year. One of the main downfalls that I felt I wanted to improve on from that experience was not relying so heavily on improvising to materialize choreography. Additionally, I also want to work towards not being so afraid to try things out of my comfort zone while attempting to be more organized by leaving enough time to therapy rehearse and finalize the piece instead of continuously changing things.

In the beginning: We spent the first few scissions learning more about different choreographers and their choreographic devices. I enjoyed the process of implementing these choreographic devices to create phrases for my work as I found myself moving further away from the style of movement I'm usually drawn towards.

As I had such a strong draw to my stimulus, I decided to start after figuring out the structure and came up with the following:

Section 1: Roots

  • Grounded, earthy free, inwards, contentment

At the start of the first section, the dynamics begin quite earthy, grounded, with a few gnarly twists. I chose this movement style as this section is designed to represent the tree's roots, and we wanted to express this through movement. I also choreographed this section to appear contented inward to represent the roots left undisturbed by humankind and self-sustaining.

Section 2: Trunk

  • Music wind instruments, uplifting
  • Spirals/spiralling upwards, hopeful, observe of the world around you

I based this section two on the tree's trunk, and the concept represents the idea of nature being this interconnected cycle of life and how everything connects to one another when left uninterrupted. To illustrate this, I tried to visually include a range of levels and reach to link this concept. I also used the Wayne Mc Gregors choreographic device of visual thinking.

Section 3: Leaves

  • Music rythmithic accented and heavy.
  • Progressively gets more hopeless leaves falling,
  • Nature choking, slowing down

Section 4:

Dying withering, mechanics overcoming nature

For the 4th and final section, I chose to have the sound of a clock ticking as the music, illustrating how time is running out for the tree due to rapid deforestation. I consider this section to be the climax of my piece, though the ticking noise embodied the artificial mechanical aspect of this section—the references back to previous sections through signature moves.

At the end of my piece, there is a section where you wander around yourself, looking lost as if reminiscing over what was taken for granted.

I brainstormed associated words to draw movement inspiration from and use as part of Wayne mc Gregor choreography method 3D thinking. I also drew much of my choreographic inspiration from doing further research on the main themes drawn from the stimulus. For example, I choreographed a short floorwork phrase using Wayne McGreggors 3D visual thinking method and knew I wanted to use the phrase in my piece; however, it didn't link to the theme. To the phrase in my piece, but didn't have any links to the theme. To resolve this, I reviewed my research notes and used this to make changes to the phrase to make it more relevant, for example.
